Announcement from SEO and Operations Editor Bryan Flaherty and Head of Curation and Platforms Coleen O’Lear:

We’re thrilled to announce the addition of three female editors to The Post’s SEO team: Candace Mitchell, Gwen Milder and Ashleigh Wilson. These SEO editors will work to create strategies to reach and retain new, younger and more diverse audiences through search platforms and expand editorial best practices around SEO, recirculation and persistent content.

They join Jai-Leen James, Matt Clough and Maite Fernandez on the newsroom’s core SEO team, formerly known as Operations, to expand our optimization efforts and anticipate short- and long-term trends. This group, which includes global audience editors Sofia Diogo Mateus and Grace Moon and service journalism editor Megan Griffith-Greene, will form a refocused SEO team focused on strategic growth and search audience engagement at The Post. He will continue to work closely with editors and reporters from across the newsroom and with the product team to develop tactics and tools to reach this key audience.

As Senior SEO Editor, Candace will lead our search engagement strategy. She will work with teams across the company to understand our search audience and identify opportunities to create content to convert them into regular visitors and loyal subscribers.

Candace joins us from Gannett, where she led the digital production team at NorthJersey.com and the Record for several years before becoming director of digital subscription strategy for the Atlantic region. In this role, she trained and worked with more than 30 newsrooms to help grow digital subscriptions. She also led a team of reporters covering a variety of topics, including local news and transportation in the New York metro area, a role that brought her experience as a data-driven, audience-first thinker to editing and assigning stories.

A native of New Jersey, she majored in communications and literature at Ramapo College in New Jersey. In her spare time, Candace enjoys reading and talking about the Philadelphia Eagles.

As Senior SEO Editor, Gwen will lead our SEO strategy around persistent content and collaborate with our feature journalism editor, newsroom reporting and product teams to develop and maintain persistent content.

Gwen comes to us from Motley Fool, where she worked as an SEO content strategist with a focus on evergreen content. She has spent her career immersed in understanding search users and has a deep understanding of SEO strategy, tactics and technical expertise. At the Motley Fool, her team rethought the information architecture of the website’s enduring content and created a catalog of investing and retirement guides to make the Motley Fool the authority on those topics among readers and search engines.

She was previously a digital producer at AARP and a U.S. travel editor. News & World Report. She holds a master’s degree in journalism from Georgetown and a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

A native of North Carolina, Gwen enjoys traveling, cooking and decorating for Christmas earlier than some may think is acceptable. Gwen lives in Takoma Park, Md., with her husband, Max; tuxedo cat, Barry; and pit boxer, Roxie.

Ashleigh joins the team as SEO Editor after serving as Audience Engagement Producer at the Houston Chronicle, where she led daily programming for the homepage; tracked audience data and trends; and optimized content and projects, including a report on how Southern Baptist leaders routinely silenced victims of sexual abuse. She also served as deputy editor of HouWeAre, a newsletter about identity, race and culture in one of America’s most diverse cities.

Previously, Ashleigh was a web producer and Alexa briefing host at Newsday, a home page producer at the Arizona Republic and a digital producer in New York.

Ashleigh was born in Northern Virginia and is beyond excited to be back in the area. (Fun fact: The Washington Post was the first newspaper Ashleigh read, grabbing the KidsPost while her dad read the Sunday edition.)

She holds a BA in Journalism and Mass Communications from North Carolina A&T State University and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

Ashleigh has a sweet tooth, which goes perfectly with her hobby of baking and seeking out the best local pastry shops. He has a 14-year-old sister, who wants to be a pastry chef, and a 19-year-old brother, who is a private pilot at Middle Tennessee State University.
