Master of SEO arts Barry Adams explains what publishers need to do to improve their relationship with everyone’s biggest source of readers – Google.
Adams, of Polemic Digital, has been building websites and working with many leading media brands on SEO strategy for over 20 years. Speaking at an important conference in London for publishing executives, organized by the Glide Publishing Platform at Amazon HQ, he gave an interesting, and clear, introduction to the latest ideas on how to get traffic from Google.
But first a warning. Google gives and Google takes. And when it comes to media publishers, the search giant has been taking over in recent years.

Google search algorithm updates
Google makes major updates to its search algorithm every few months. These are the changes to the instructions given to the AI-brain that powers Google search. According to Adams, Google’s search technology lives inside a black box and even it doesn’t know how search updates will play out when they’re released in the real world. This is why they often have unexpected results and sometimes need to be reversed.

The last major Google search was the link spam update on December 14, 2022 aimed at cracking down on “spammy” link behavior. These are links placed in websites with the aim of playing Google search rankings. Links to sites are one of the ways that Google’s algorithm determines whether they deserve a position in the search.
Previous changes included the useful content update of August 2022, which focused on breaking down search-ready articles that summarize what others have written without adding value and there are articles that fail to answer the question posed in the title, leaving readers. Adams warns that publishers have been facing the problem of climbing to Google since March 2018, the date of the Google search update Adams describes as Newspocalypse – a change that has significantly reduced the amount of space that Google has given to many news websites.
He uses a graph provided by SEO research company Sistrix to show that the BBC’s search visibility has fallen significantly since 2018, alongside many other news publishers.
“Everybody took a big nose and hasn’t recovered since. It was the first instance where Google said ‘fuck you’ to news websites.”
“In 2018 publishers were put on the road and Google said ‘you can represent this and nothing else’. If you write outside of these ways it is very difficult to get traction in Google search results.
“The Daily Mail for example rarely does stories about the royal family [even though you have great expertise in this area]. Google is not going to let them take part of that.”
Adams said that publishers are not attractive and there is no way when it comes to what is ruled by Google, but they can improve things through “the power of small access”. By earning 1% better every day.
The three pillars of Google news SEO strategy
“You can get your visibility back until the next time Google says ‘fuck you news websites’.”
Adams breaks down what Google does in three main areas of activity: crawling websites, indexing them and ranking them.
The three pillars of SEO as he sees them are focused on these areas: technology to improve the way your site is crawled, the importance of the content to ensure that it is organized and the authority (ensuring that Google gets the right signals to get your content in the search. results).
The speed of your website is the most important factor in ensuring that it is always crawled by Google. Websites should have a server response time of less than 200 milliseconds, Adams says. Anything slower than 600ms and “you should worry”.
Writing relevant news content for Google
Enhanced Mobile Pages, he says, is pretty much dead as a program. This was the format in which sites presented pages that were quickly delivered to mobile devices by Google. Reuters, Ragamuna and others have turned off AMP without any repercussions. But, Adams warns, don’t turn off AMP unless your “core web vitals” are good.
“Subscribing to Google and subscribing to people are almost the same, Google just requires an additional signature.”
Adams said there are three important things on the page that Google focuses on when trying to rank your article:
2) Page title (can be longer)
3) Page title (65 to 70 character limit).
The next most important piece of content is your intro – the summary paragraph that Google displays and publishes next to the topic in search. So while the title should outline the topic, the introduction should summarize the topic in a nutshell.
Note: Most news websites will have a place where you can write a Google summary as separate from the on-page intro (thereby allowing for more creative news and features).
Adams describes internal links within articles as “SEO superpowers” – especially when it comes to linking to your website’s topic and subject pages.
“If you do that systematically you will see a big reward, it just works.”
When it comes to specific URLs for your articles, Adams says these are “a very small ranking factor”. So when it comes to the URL structure he says it’s easy: “Define it once and then leave the fuck alone”.
Google employs thousands of raters who use published guidelines to rate websites to ensure that those with Expertise, Authority and Credibility (EAT) are found in search results.
SEO tips and pitfalls for news publishers:
How to make scoops work
Adams suggests three key ways websites can impress Google raters:
Google says it rewards content creators. But The Sun has lamented that its complaints are often investigated by deputies who have done little more than raise the issue.
Adams says: “Google says it wants to give prominence to the first to publish a story. That doesn’t happen. Google has a selection of recent articles. If you’re the first with a breach you’re not going to rank for that story.
“Google causes the top stories [in search] because of search volume and publication volume. If you’re the first to tell a story, nothing happens.”
If you have a scoop, Adams recommends writing spin-off articles throughout the day. And if you can’t write the first article on the subject, writing the best can lead to more traffic anyway.
AI-written content is risky
If there’s a major update made to a story, he recommends giving it a new URL and setting up a redirect from the old one so that Google knows it’s a new story and replays it. Popularity on the first page also helps Google find stories.
Advertising overload is a lose-lose strategy
According to Adams, AI-written content is a sure way to lower your site’s EAT score with Google and is something that search engines can easily detect.
Overloading the site with short-term game ads is a self-defeating strategy, according to Adams.
Era of easy clicks is coming to an end
“A lot of advertising hurts a website in the long run because it makes the page load slower. The faster the page loads the better for everything: better for advertisers and better for Google.”
Adams predicts that in the next year or so Google will stop rewarding articles like “X what time is the football game on” which are written to attract cheap clicks while providing the reader with little or no value. “It’s better to have a topic and write about it in detail.” He suggests these types of articles will be penalized by Google “probably before the end of March in the next core update”.
