TikTok SEO Tips for Attracting Generation Z audiences

TikTok SEO Tips for Attracting Generation Z audiences

For more than a decade, when companies talked about search engine optimization (SEO), they defaulted to talking about Google. With the rise of digital powerhouses in the e-commerce and social media spaces—including the buy-anything platform Amazon and video-sharing apps like TikTok—online searches for products, entertainment and information have begun to move elsewhere.

At a recent conference in Aspen, Prabhakar Raghavan, senior vice president of Google Knowledge and Information revealed that a large portion of younger people between the ages of 18 and 24 are bypassing Google in favor of social media searches when looking for information.

“In our studies, about 40% of young people, when looking for a place to have lunch, don’t go to Google Maps or Search – they go to TikTok or Instagram,” he said. “We keep learning again and again that new Internet users don’t have the expectations and way of thinking we’re used to. The questions they ask are completely different.”

The decline of Google searches is not a new trend: an oft-cited 2016 study published by big data technology firm BloomReach found that 55% of searches for consumer products originate from Amazon.com. That’s a number that has probably grown since then. And as tech companies continue to launch new web products, platforms and apps, search options will further erode Google’s market share.

For content creators and brand marketers, this means that at this point, aside from relying on arcane algorithms, learning social media SEO for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn is essential to getting the right content in front of new audiences. Best practices vary by platform, but for most, implementing a smart strategy around keywords and hashtags will go a long way in increasing discovery.

There is now an entire genre of content on TikTok that helps creators improve their SEO and get found on the app. Creators like Mike Rama, who runs a platform that connects UGC producers and brands, have started publishing free, informative posts extolling the importance of using the best search terms possible, as well as providing helpful tips—including demonstrations of how to use TikTok search bars to find the most popular search terms with autocomplete based on the initial words, then create posts about each of the most searched topics.

Unlike flash-in-the-pan memes and trends, search-optimized content gains traction over time as people intentionally search for information and posts rack up clicks, says Yvonne Dekoning, a former Saks Fifth Avenue social media manager who now provides social media training for brands and corporate executives. Her TikTok content focuses on tutorials.

Meanwhile, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn have expanded their product offerings — most notably LinkedIn with its just-launched Creators Suite — providing users with easy ways to populate existing platforms with robust multimedia and other searchable content. Anyone with an internet connection, a keyboard and a camera can feed the beast – the more content, the merrier it seems – or at least the more opportunities there are to appear in search, on and off Google, and bring audiences and eyeballs to the platform’s technology everywhere.
