However, relative numbers can have more meaning when compared to keywords whose traffic levels are known from a particular keyword phrase.

One way to do this is to compare the keyword search volume with a keyword whose traffic numbers are already known, for example, from a PPC campaign.

If your keyword volume is so large that you don’t have a keyword to compare, there is another way to find a keyword to use for comparison.

A comparison word does not have to be relative. It can be in different verticals and it can even be the name of a popular celebrity.

The most important thing is the volume information of the words in general.

Example Of How To Pinpoint Search Volume

I will use the search term [how to lose weight] as an example of how to use Google Trends to get close to the actual search volume.

My approach is to use a large number of known searches and compare them to the target keyword phrase.

Google offers a search engine on its advanced search page, which can be adjusted for what is happening in each country.

On this particular day (September 22, 2022), the actress Ana De Armas continues to search more than 50,000, and the former American football player (word word [Bret Favre News]) continues with more than 20,000 searches.

Step 1. Search Search Engines For Target Keywords

The keyword we are researching is [how to lose weight].

Below is a snapshot of a year’s worth of target word phrases:

As you can see, the line is a solid structure from September 2021 to September 2022.

Then I added the total of the two keywords that we had close search volume counts to compare all three, but for a 24 hour period.

I use a 24-hour time frame because the search volume for our search terms continues for that same day.

Our target phrase, with the red line, is right in the middle, between the phrases [Ana De Armas] (blue) and [Bret Favre News] (yellow).

What the comparison above tells us is that the term [how to lose weight] has a higher keyword volume over 20,000 searches but less than 50,000+ searches.

The relative search volume of [how to lose weight] is 50% of the keyword [Ana De Armas].

Because we know that [Ana De Armas] has about 50,000+ search volume on that particular day, and [Bret Favre News] has 20,000+ query volume on the same day, we can accurately say that the keyword phrase, [ how to lose weight] has about 30,000 daily searches on an average day, give or take a few thousand.

The actual numbers may be higher because Google Trends shows increases and decreases at specific times of the day. The day’s total is likely higher.

The above hack is not 100% accurate. But it’s enough to give a solid ballpark idea and can be used to compare and optimize the data extracted from paid keyword research tools.

2. Discover Insights From Time-based Trends

There are generally two ways to look at key data: long-term and short-term.

You can set Google Trends to show you traffic trends back to 2004. This is important to show you audience trends.
